Happy fall, everyone!
You know eating vegetables is healthy and you want to add a salad or two into your diet. But you are stuck with eating just a few types of vegetables because you don’t know how to incorporate the unfamiliar ones into your diet. Sounds like you? Read on!
Your body requires a full spectrum of nutrients and antioxidants to protect it from the stress we experience on a daily basis, and the excess toxins we are exposed to. Eating a variety of vegetables to provide a full-spectrum of nutrients and antioxidants to support your optimal energy will help you feel great from the inside and out.
Beets are one of my favourite superfoods. They are in season summer through fall but they are especially beneficial for this time of the year. Beets contains some unique phytonutrients. You probably already noticed what I call-‘committing a beet murder’ when cutting into a fresh beet root. The vibrant colour stains the skin and the cutting board, it’s so hard to remove.
Beets contains some unique phytonutrients (betanin, isobetanin and vulgaxanthin) that’s been studied extensively to control inflammation in our bodies. The mechanism is so fascinating; these enzymes literally dissolve inflammatory triggers, which are linked to heart diseases and diabetes. These enzymes clear the build-up of homocystein by supporting liver detoxification.
Unfortunately beets get a bad rep for ‘tasting like dirt’, but no worries, I have a few tricks to turn the beastly challenge (sorry about my cheeky puns!) into a creamy, buttery treat. Today we will be turning beets into a smoothie, which features an extra kick of potent antioxidants from mixed berries. This recipe is not just great for its heart-loving properties, it also clears the body of toxins and repairs sun-kissed skin in the summertime.
Let’s get started!
