I’ve been loving this non-toxic body spray to help my skin stay cool and fresh. This easy recipe takes only 4 ingredients and under 5 minutes to make. I got some expert insights from my good friend, Mary Chipman, who is exceptionally talented with DIY essential oil recipes. She’s my go-to person to ask if I needed a natural insect repellent recipe, sleep time pillow spray or the most delicious holiday home fragrance.
I decided to dabble in the art of DIY fragrance myself with Mary’s tips. My first attempt is very successful! This body mist recipe doubles as a natural air freshener. I highly recommend this quick, fail-proof recipe because it simply will put a smile on your face minus all the nasty chemicals. According to a report published by the Environmental Working Group in 2010, developing adolescents are particularly at risk for hormone-disrupting chemicals such as phthalates. On average, each tested commercial fragrance product contains 4 endocrine-disrupting chemicals, mimicking estrogen and affecting thyroid health.
Here are some tips I’ve learned from my DIY experience:
1. Don’t worry if your measurements are not perfect.
This recipe is incredibly forgiving If you follow my recipe exactly, your spray will be lightly scented with just a hint of peppermint. Based on your preference, you can tone up the strength by adding more oil in 5-drop increments.
2. Experiment with your favourite Scents
Be creative with your scents! I will share why I chose this simple combination below but feel free to experiment with your own. As long as you follow the base of 10-15 drops of essential oil in 30ml of liquid, your finished product will be amazing.
3. Role of Vodka or Witch Hazel Extract (in alcohol base)
The alcohol serves as a stabilizer in this recipe. I recommend filling up at least ⅓ of the bottle because it’s going to help the essential oil disperse evenly. This technique prevents staining when you use this spray on fabric surfaces and protects your skin from burning from the essential oils. Although the alcohol helps the oil suspend in the liquid better, still shake well before apply and avoid your eyes.
4. Choose a Dark Glass Spray Bottles
Many essential oils are light-sensitive, so dark bottles can filter out ultraviolet light and protect the aromatic and therapeutic properties of the oil. Choose a glass bottle to prevent the oil from eroding plastic bottles.
I choose this combination because it’s lively and refreshing and I hope your summer days are going to be full of fun and energy.

Neroli oil is an extraction from the blooms of the bitter orange tree. It has an uplifting citrus/floral scent. Studies have shown inhalation of this essential oil relieves stress by reducing cortisol (the stress hormone) release!
As the peppermint oil dries it leaves the skin feeling cool and hydrated.

Neroli Mint Body Spray Recipe
Inspired by Mary Chipman
30 drops Neroli essential oil
10 drops Peppermint essential oil
20 ml Vodka or witch hazel extract (alcohol-based)
40 ml Distilled water
Mix all ingredients together in a dark glass bottle.
Shake well before use.
Avoid getting this spray in your eyes.
Store in a cool, dry place and avoid direct sunlight. Last up to 6 months.
